Sometimes the best things just happen.

In his autobiography The Boss Skinhead, Roy Ellis recounts how he became the singer of his first band, The Bees. This was long before they became famous under the name The Symarip. Back then, he played trombone — but one night in a small London club, a rasta in the crowd quite literally shouted him up to the microphone — all because of the tone of his voice.

“When I stood in the front line, the things started happening. And it felt nice. I realized I was a lead singer now. And it was a damned good feeling. In a way, what happened that night, was like a miracle.”

And I’m convinced that since that night, everyone in the audience — and every musician who’s ever shared a stage with him around the world — has experienced that same miracle.

And there’s been a lot of us!

Still, there had never been a full live recording that truly captured the incredible form that this man — who created Skinhead Moonstomp and the skinhead reggae genre 55 years ago — is still in. The way he can electrify a whole club, get people dancing, shouting, and deeply moved by the sheer power of his voice. Whether he’s performing the classic hits he wrote for The Symarip or his more recent songs. Not even in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that such a recording would come to life in Prague of all places.

But sometimes the best things just happen…

Out of pure passion for Roy’s music, the backing band Rudeboy Paradise was formed. That same passion brought in director Tom Tůma, who offered to film the show at Malostranská beseda with professional cameras. Guitarist and producer Neil Anderson from the Original Gravity Records joined us — again, out of sheer enthusiasm — and took the concert recording back to London to mix and prepare it for release. And both Roy Ellis and Toni Face from Liquidator Music agreed — with just as much passion — that since it all came together so well, this live album simply had to be released.

None of this was planned. It just happened.

“The feeling in my heart was great. But the main thing I realized was, that when you walked up on a stage, suddenly you were somebody.”

That’s another important message, subtly hidden in those joyful songs of his — the same ones that make you want to dance and shout the choruses out loud. I truly believe Roy is one of the greatest performers Jamaica has ever given to the world. That’s something we also tried — completely unintentionally — to capture on this album. Just don’t play it quietly.

Because when it comes to Roy Ellis, you’d better be ready for a rumble!
